About Easy Read For You CIC

Easy Read for You CIC is the brainchild of Kalpana Ratnam-Roarty.

Kalpana has aways had a passion for helping people, both in her working and private life. People who know Kalpana will say she is kind, loyal and generous to a fault and regarding her communication skills she never shuts up!

Einstein said, “if you can’t explain it to a six-year-old then you don’t understand it yourself” and this is proven to be true. In her years of teaching, charity work and the running of User & Carer Involvement she has brought this sentiment into everything she has done.

Where it all started...

It all started when Kalpana was working with pupils with severe and complex needs. She soon realised that much of the information was not accessible to not only her pupils but to many people across all sectors of society i.e. for people who speak English as an additional language; people who find it hard to read and write; people who have memory problems; or people who are in a hurry or are stressed. She could see that people did not really have choice and control over their lives due to this and she felt compelled to do something about it.

Why we want to help

We want to bridge the communication gap and make information accessible to everyone, regardless of language barriers or literacy levels. We understand that language should never be a barrier to understanding crucial information, accessing opportunities, or enjoying the richness of diverse cultures.

  • Inclusivity
  • Empowerment
  • Clarity
  • Accessibility

Kalpana Ratnam-Roarty

Kalpana has over 25 years of experience of working with people with learning difficulties, disabilities and/or autism and other additional needs.

During this time, she has had to develop communication skills to allow her to translate complex pieces of information into more accessible formats.

She can do this through a number for formats such as ‘Talking Mats’ P.E.C.S. (Picture Exchange Communication Systems) ‘Sign Along’, ‘Easy Read’.

Kalpana is also an expert in several communication technologies such as Eye Gaze, Big and Small Macs, Talking Tins and more.

Eppie Sprung

Eppie Sprung is abusiness growth consultant specialising in the third sector.  She is also Chair of Next Chapter Scotland, a Scotland-wide organisation supporting who have been involved with the criminal justice system to navigate any discrimination they may face.

Her own lived experience of the criminal justice system has left her passionate about supporting people in accessing information in a format that allows them to protect their own choices and rights.

Why it’s important to have a panel?

It is important to us at Easy Read For You CIC to work closely with people who have lived experience of finding reading difficult. We want to make sure that what we produce is a high-quality document that is understood by the core audience who will be reading it.

Who they are?

To make sure that this happens, we work with a panel of people with a range of lived experiences around reading difficulties. This might be for people who speak English as an additional language; people who find it hard to read and write; people who have memory problems; or people who are in a hurry or are stressed.

We value the time, effort and expertise that people give us and, with this in mind, a percentage of any payment received goes directly to the panel.
